Elemental Equity provides a simple, direct and transparent way for you (and anyone you know) to ‘green your footprint’ and join in with positive action for sustainability.
Elemental Equity is a charitable fund utilizing donations and in-kind contributions from individuals and corporate social responsibility actions to invest in people (social capital) and environment (natural capital) across the Baviaanskloof Mega-Reserve, and the subtropical thicket in South Africa.
Elemental Equity aims to upscale restoration implementation and enable the feasible expansion of activities onto private and communal land where desirable. The fund engages teams previously trained through South African Government’s successful ‘Working for Water’ programme: a poverty-relief initiative with social and ecological objectives. Along with sister initiatives (Working for Wetlands and Working on Fire),Elemental Equity provides a ‘bridge’ for teams who have completed their governmental contract and are seeking to enter the private sector with their newly acquired skills in landscape restoration. Your investment supports this incentive scheme (Elemental Earnings) for rewarding the communities, land-owners and contracted teams helping to sustainably manage our landscapes*.
* This type of incentive programme is also known as Payments for Ecosystem Services. This is where the beneficiaries of the services provided by healthy ecosystems provide (usually tangible) compensation to the ‘stewards’ or ‘custodians’ of the environment who are responsible for conserving and restoring these elements of healthy landscapes / ecosystems which provide benefit to others.
The part of the Elemental Equity fund “Air” supports activities which aim to restore a healthy balance of oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) in our atmosphere. Your investment goes directly towards planting native subtropical thicket species (primarily the carbon thirsty spekboom, (Portulacaria afra) which stores carbon dioxide (considered a key factor in accelerating climate change) in the soil and biomass as well as rehabilitating degraded land by increasing vegetation cover. Not only carbon is stored and vegetation increased when supporting Air; the ground water table will be restored by a better infiltration from water in to soil, less erosion will occur in the area. With this better infiltration, a more constant water flow to water catchments will make sure surrounded areas in the Eastern Cape will be able to make use of a bigger water supply. Also, work is provided to the “poorest of the poor”; planting Spekboom will create jobs for the people from the communities in and around the landscape.Different types of investments can be done to support the element Air:
€ 0 – € 500; Green Household Investment R 0 – R 5000 (South African Rands)
Investors will receive proof of payment with a map of the planting site and information about carbon sequestration through planting Spekboom.
€ 500 – € 5000; Green Travel Investment R 5000 – R 50000 (South African Rands)
Investors will receive a scientific certificate with maps of the planting site and, information about carbon sequestration specific to their investment. A completion report will be sent to the investor after planting and monitoring. The investor will be publicised on the Elemental Equity website (if desired).
€ 5000 and above; Green Company Investment R 50000 and above (South African Rands)
Investors will receive a scientific certificate with maps of the planting site, pictures from the specific planting site and information about carbon sequestration specific to their investment. A completion report will be sent to the investor after planting and monitoring which contains details about the amount of carbon sequestrated in the planting site. Two years after planting, an update, performed by Rhodes University, will be sent to the investor with the growth rates of the planted Spekboom. The investor will be publicised on the Elemental Equity website (if desired).

People (Community) is the quintessential “5th Element”. It allows you to invest directly in people and enables ‘helping hands for healing lands’. A Warm Fuzzy Feeling is about cultivating thoughts and actions which strengthen community capacity-building for nature conservation and restoration across the Baviaanskloof Mega-Reserve.Your Warm Fuzzy Feeling investment directly supports ‘hands-on’ environmental educational programmes; youth wilderness trails; plant-growing (propagation) workshops; horticultural skills training, and the realisation of a botanical gardens first for the Eastern Cape Province. These botanical gardens are being designed to showcase both the ecological diversity of the region’s flora as well as the cultural importance of these “people’s plants” in terms of their socio-economic, medicinal, ritual and spiritual benefits. These activities are based at the “PRESENCE Learning Village” – and integrated hub for restoration, cultivation and education. Or, quite simply, a place for “growing plants and growing people.”
(NOTE: The PRESENCE Learning Village is partnership between Living Lands, Working for Water and Gamtoos Irrigation Board.)
